Today’s retail environment is complex. Competitive pressure to deliver value and innovative service models that keep shoppers loyal are compounded by the lack of interoperability of the retail ecosystem. The design and deployment of data-driven experiences across multiple components—devices, operating systems, networks, application frameworks, communication protocols—challenges businesses of all sizes. Furthermore, the era of digital transformation is ushering in new technologies that are in early stages of forming unified standards, creating a need for a common open framework to enable an ecosystem of inter-changeable components with ease and speed.

A Retail Focused Open Source Initiative
The Open Retail Initiative is a retail-focused Open Source initiative. Through this effort, retail thought leaders will solve some of retail’s biggest challenges focused on:

Maximizing business value from accessible in-store data across components of the ecosystem.

Accelerating solution development through suggested applications for developing retail use cases using a variety of ecosystem components, or “ingredients”.

Driving down overall technology costs improving ROI through the deployment of systems that are modular, multi-purpose and interoperable—enabling accessibility, flexibility, and scale.

Leveraging the experience from EdgeX Foundry, other open source code, standards efforts, and commercial offerings allows participants the ability to engage in the ORI through an Intel coordinated Commerce Project that is associated with EdgeX Foundry.
